Heart valve surgery
The heart valves direct blood in the right direction. When they become damaged (narrowing or leakage), surgery can repair or replace them.
What is it?
Depending on the valve's condition, repair (valvuloplasty) is preferred whenever possible; when it is not, the valve is replaced with a mechanical or biological prosthesis.
Who is it for?
It concerns patients with valve narrowing (stenosis), leakage (regurgitation), or a valve infection (endocarditis). The type of procedure is tailored to each case.
How your care works
The procedure is usually performed with cardiopulmonary bypass. The choice between repair and a prosthesis, and the type of prosthesis, are explained to you beforehand.
Recovery and follow-up
After close monitoring, recovery is gradual. Regular follow-up checks that the repaired or replaced valve works well.
When to consult?
Breathlessness, palpitations, fatigue, swollen legs, or a newly detected heart murmur: a specialist opinion helps assess the situation.
